Gridiron Green Gang's Ground Zero
Sabine field has embodied the traditions of Norwich University athletics for decades. Specifically, Sabine has been around for almost 100 years which puts it into perspective that Norwich sports games are the most exciting sports competitions in Vermont. Home of the Norwich cadets, Sabine Field has hosted many classic sports battles that have entertained Norwich students and fans for many years in many different sports. The football team’s pregame run out in between the rooks has been a traditional ritual that gets the crowd and the players pumped for every game. Jake Burke and myself, Mike Corinna, are starters on the Norwich football team on defense. We have experienced the traditions of Sabine Field for the past three years and there is nothing like it in all of Division III football. Sabine Field is a 3,000 capacity stadium that was first opened in 1921. The field is named for the son of Dr. George K. Sabine, a member of Norwich's Class of 1868. Following the completion of the 2012 football season, Norwich constructed a ten-month renovation project worth $6 million and it has transformed Sabine Field from to a multi-sport, multi-activity, lit stadium that can be used in most weather conditions. The project has added; a Synthetic turf field that meets NCAA regulations for football, soccer, and lacrosse, a 400 meter running track with 42-inch lanes, energy-efficient stadium lights and a new sound system, bleachers, and press box. The new building houses appropriate storage for field and athletic equipment. Elegant walkways to prevent damage to field and new equipment that includes; goals, field goal posts and field care equipment. The updated Sabine Field is very new and extremely up to date with its technology. Without Sabine Field, Norwich University would not be where it is today. This field gathers strangers together to cheer on all Norwich sports in a unique experience. Football especially has the most pristine custom to which every game is a crazy experience. Norwich University prides itself on having a beautiful football stadium and updating this elegant stadium will only bring more positive publicity to Norwich. The Gridiron Green Gang is attempting to make Sabine even greater. Having the Norwich athletes and fans understand how the new field will work makes the unique field draw in more fans and future athletes to want to become part of this rich Norwich tradition that has been going on for years.
